Is it possible to play online against someone with Civilization IV is you have a Civilization IV expansion?

yes you can play against someone with just civilizations 4, but you have to make sure you load up the civ4 game and not the expansion. You can't use content and civs from bts and warlords if you do that, so just make sure you load up the regular game.

I bought Civilization IV Gold Edition and there is no tutorial option on the main menu?

why isn't it not their?I bought Civilization IV Gold Edition and there is no tutorial option on the main menu?
A tutorial is only available on the original Civilization IV, not on any of the expansions. The first games are very difficult because of this, but thanks to the fact that everything is so cleverly set up that you'll quickly get the hang of it all.

What makes it easy to learn is the Civilopedia, which is available on the main menu. You will observe in the right-hand menu of the Civilopedia a list of twenty (20) major categories. The most useful for any player may be Hints, Game Concepts, and [Expansion Pack] Concepts. The other categories, all of which will occasionally be useful, are Technologies, Units, Buildings, Wonders, Base Terrain, Terain Features, Resources, Improvements, Specialists, Promotions, Unit Categories, Civilizations, Leaders, Religions, [Corporations, ]Civics, and Projects. Each of these categories will display from a few to dozens of subcategories in the left-hand menu. If you click on any of the listed subcategories, you will bring up a full-page description, which usually contains full-color illustration.

Since the game is turn-based, you can always stop play in order to peruse the Civilopedia. Furthermore, if you are dissatisfied with your play prior to learning some new strategies, tactics, or techniques, you can always load any saved game file and return to play at an earlier date.

I have always been able to learn rapidly enough through trial and error, coupled with reading the manuals (in earlier versions) or Civilopedia (which is all that I have needed for Civ 4). I have never needed to use a tutorial.

However, there were a few websites that helped me occasionally, like Wounded Knight's Strategy Guide:

http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/strategy鈥?/a>

and

Sulla's Walkthrough:

I've read nothing but positive things about Civ IV, but a lot of complaints about Civ V. Hi, I've recently gotten into playing Sid Meyer's Civilization IV, it rocks. Anyway, I want to find out (if there is one) a way to edit a units characteristics (such as movement, strength etc.). Also, I downloaded the SDK, however all I got was a bunch of files, no install file, no run program just random code, text, and other random files, so how do I go about using the SDK?

    Thanks!Civilization IV?

    Civilization IV?

I recently borrowed the Civilization IV game, and can anybody give me some really good hints (not, cheats) about the game? I'm usually good at city building games, but this will be my first "Civilization" game.Civilization IV?
Well, I usually take Hatshepsut because of culture (it expands your territory) and and spirituality (your country never goes in revolution) but Gandhi is good also. First you should make either your scout or warrior (depends which you start with) scout. And, of course make a city with your settler. Then, in your city, make another warrior to defend it (when its ready make it defend and create another one). For the technology, it depends what you want to do... If you want to destroy your opponents soon in the game, go with millitary and economy... if you want a prosperous beginning choose growth and science. Then, when u have about 3 warriors, make a worker, then a monument, and then a granary. This should give you a good start.Civilization IV?
It is really boring it doesn't make senseCivilization IV?
i've never played Civilization IV but i've played C. III, and the basic way to get a good start is to make lots of farm areas near ur place (within ur border), then head out with workers and connect to resources w/ roads... (first explore with ur cheapest warrior) (and also make a settler or two and build a second city near-far from ur starting point...) (meaning somewhere where ur first city's boarder dont reach but not too far where u cant go and defend it)

    good luck....

like in civilization III you can make it so the you are the only empire that exists. i want to know if you can do the same in colonization? In civilization IV colonization, how do i make it so that i am the only civilization?
You undoubtedly want to play as a Single Player, so select "Single Player" in the opening menu. On the next menu, you will see the option, "Custom Game." Select it. You will now be able to specify each of the civilizations. Team 1 will be your chosen civilization. For Teams 2-12, open the pull-down menu in the left-hand column, and select "Closed" for each of the teams. That should leave yours as the only civilization. After you have specified all of your custom settings, click on "Launch!" in the bottom right corner of the screen, and the game will commence.

Does Civilization IV:beyond the sword just add more game options?

I have ordered Civilization IV: Beyond the sword and im wondering does it has all the game play from Civilization IV and more or has it got all its own units and game play? please help :)Does Civilization IV:beyond the sword just add more game options?
It offers new everything, new leaders, new civ's, new units new buildings including wonders, but the most important additions are corporations and scenarios, like the space based "Final Frontier" where you colonize star systems rather than cities, or "After World" which plays more like an RPG than a Civ game, it is a great expansion pack if you have civ 4 already then I would highly recommend getting Beyond the Sword.Does Civilization IV:beyond the sword just add more game options?
its an expansion, so you're still playing civ4. it just has more civs, leaders, wonders, etc. plus there is more emphasis on espionoage. but you don't really have to re-learn anything.

  • I have a few questions about the game civilization IV. Anyone care to help?

First, how can I increase population rate?

    Second, what does espionage do?

The game manual isn't in the box and I can't figure out the in game interface.. I've always relied on the kindness of strangers anyway so if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.I have a few questions about the game civilization IV. Anyone care to help?
Population change is dependent on food supply. If the food supply coming into a city is exactly enough to feed the population in that city (I think each population unit eats 2 food), then all is well and the population does not change. If there is more food coming in than the population can eat, the population grows. If there is more demand for food than supply, then the population shrinks. Therefore, you want to maximize your food intake to expand your population faster. To facilitate this, build and improve farms, place your cities in places where food is plentiful, and so on. Keep in mind that you will often have to sacrifice other resources in the process, so while your population is growing faster, production and monetary income will suffer.

Espionage makes other governments in the game think more like yours, and makes it easier to convince cities that belong to other governments to secede and join your government. This is a very simplistic explanation, but a thorough explanation is too long to give here. - LJS

In Civilization IV, what do I do when the citizens of my city say it's too crowded?

Also, how do I get gold?In Civilization IV, what do I do when the citizens of my city say it's too crowded?
the 'too crowded' unhappiness is just the default malcontent. if you're at war, people ,ight demand peace, if you don't have any troops protecting the city, they will complain about that, certain building will make people unhappy.

the too crowded thing is just the one thing they're unhappy with if they have nothing else to complain about. if you have solved all the other issues, just make sure that the citizens have access to something that makes the happy (certain resources, religious buildings, other buildings etc.) and there won't be a problem

edit: using a code to make a demo run long after its supposed to is stealing. if it were meant to play longer it wouldn't be a demo now would it. adding a file to give you all the campaigns is a cheat code. thats modding.

bypassing the normal runtime of a game or any program demo to extend it to like the full program version is illegal. thats called piracy. even though its done alot its still illegal. Is there a way I can keep Civilization iv demo going?
none that i know of, try searching in gamespot

and that is not illegal you berk. yea right, like if you make the game run after 100 turns they cantake legal actions against you or somethin. in fact thats called Modding.

You probably clobbered one of Civ's DLLs. Try navigating to Civ's .exe file and right-clicking on the .exe. Then, select Properties. Once the Properties open, choose the compatibility mode for XP.

In Civilization IV, is there a way to view all of your units?

I am struggling to find all of the units I have made.In Civilization IV, is there a way to view all of your units?
Hit the military advisor button (looks like a shield). This will tell you about all of units. If you want to find specific kinds of units, (like maybe you sent a caravel off to explore the world and now you want to find it) click on the Caravels item in the military advisor screen. This will make the world map blink with the location of every caravel you currently own. You can then click on the blinking dot on the map to go there and find the unit.

If you then want to find a different kind of unit (say all of your pikemen) you just click on Pikeman on the military advisor screen and the map will blink with all of the pikemen. However, you need to remember to click the caravels (on the military advisor screen) again to turn off the blinking caravels on the map.

By the way, if you want to keep track of a specific unit, you can click on that unit (on the map, not in the advisor screen) and then hit CTRL-{a number from 0-9]. So, if I have a highly promoted Knight that I want to be able to find at any time, I can hit Ctrl-5 when it is selected. Then, later in the game when I want to call that unit to the front, all I need to do is hit the 5 button, and that unit will automatically become active, no matter where it was or what it was doing.

How does Civilization IV: Colonization differ from Sid Meier's Colonization?

In addition to updated graphics engine and a multiplayer segment, Civilization IV: Colonization has many new gameplay mechanics. When starting the game, in addition to choosing a starting European nation, a player chooses between two governors, each with different advantages. In addition, national borders is a gameplay concept taken from the Civilization IV game. This means that rivals cannot pass into each other's land unless they have an open borders agreement - or by declaring war.

Unlike the original game, nations cannot recruit the same founding fathers. Each founding father is recruited by one and only one nation / player. Moreover, founding fathers will only join nations with certain criteria, namely a certain level of "points" obtained in various categories (political, military, exploration, religion, and trade).

After the player declares independence, players draft a constitution determining the government style of their independent nation. For example, if a player chooses a monarchical system, then he can still trade with Europe during the war for independence.

Unskilled citizens are placed in a school or college to learn, rather than a skilled colonist being placed in that building to teach.

Settlements now have build queues. If tools are not present but are required to complete a construction, the next building in the queue may commence. When the required tools are available, the pending building can be completed without affecting the current construction.

In the original game, a treasure train took up the entire 6 slots of the cargo hold of a Galleon. Now these ships carry treasure in a single cargo slot, allowing them to transport six.

All Indian settlements train more than one colonist. In the original game, only the capital could do that, the other settlements refused further training after the first one.

I think civ 2 is probably the best but 4 is worth a purchase if this kind of game appeals. For those who play Civilization IV, I've got a question. How come it takes forever to discover a technology?

I've checked various message boards on this game and none of them have answered my question.

I've noticed that in one game, it would take me over 200-300 turns to get to one specific technology. Often, I would have to trade technologies or bribe another ruler for a specific tech. (or hope I get a scholar in a specific city to help with the advancements).

Why does this happen? Is it the way I've advanced my game or the size of my "country?"For those who play Civilization IV, I've got a question. How come it takes forever to discover a technology?
    That's a strange problem.

The only time I see such a situation is when the country is in "Anarchy" state for 1 or 2 turns when I change the government type and those stuff.

Well, some factors including the percent of money spend between research and culture, and the number of city. In a city, certain improvement such as university or observatory for example, contributes a certain amount of research point

In that sense, if you are they kind of player that builds almost every improvement including those that adds reseach points, then the more city you have, the more research points you have and the faster your reseach is.

That means, as you advance into the game, your research points goes up. Just make sure you expand and build those research improvement

Then, for the tech, newer tech takes more research points to complete. This is not a problem if you research every tech because you gradually move to more advance tech as your empire expands, so both requirement of research as well as your empire's research points goes up together and you don't see the difference

But if you tries to rush to a certain advance tech by just research a certain path towards that tech, then your research requirement will increasingly exceeds your capability because the more advance the tech is, the more research it requires and you sort of research an advance tech "a little too soon" and your tech starts to take longer and longer

Anyway, have you check http://forums.civfanatics.com/ ?

I think they should be able to give you at least some good advice. The users there are mostly advance players.

I'm just a casual player, lolFor those who play Civilization IV, I've got a question. How come it takes forever to discover a technology?

That's a great game. I personally prefer Louis for the French. He is good at culture and industry. Culture sends your borders into the stratosphere at the beginning of the game and industry makes building Wonders much easier. Their cultural unit sucks though. Musketeers can move 2 spaces but primitive gunpowder units aren't around for long on normal game speed. I only recommend France if you are shooting for a cultural victory.

And also how do make your cities healthier? In civilization IV how do you uncrowd a city?
To uncrowd a city you simply starve it. Make the city select the tiles that aren't food and the population with slowly decrease.

To make a city healthier add stuff like recycling centers, aqueducts, etc... Making your city next to a river will also give you a boost. Having access to a lot of different goods also increases the health of the city. But you're going to have to accept that your biggest cities will always probably have a negative health. Oh yea, there's that one civic I think its environmentalism that increases your health.

How to transport units by boat in Sid Meier's Civilization IV ?

I can't transport my settlers, infantry or artillery, please help me.

In advance Thanks. AnDr3$.How to transport units by boat in Sid Meier's Civilization IV ?
Make sure, first of all, that it is a boat that can transport units, and check what kinds. (Frigates cannot carry anything, Caravels only carry certain units, Galleys carry everything, etc.)

Then, if you are in a city, select the unit that you want to put on the boat (it has to be in the city too) and click the "load" button at the bottom of the screen in the unit commands section. It should look like a ramp going onto a ship. If there is more than one transport, the game will prompt you to tell you which boat to put the unit on.

If you are outside of a city, you should merely be able to move the unit onto the square occupied by the boat. The squares must be adjacent, however.

How can I play Civilization IV in windowed mode?

I see no option for it in the game. How can I play Civilization IV in windowed mode?
How to play Civ IV in Windowed Mode:

    1. Once you are playing the game, press the %26lt;Esc%26gt; key to bring up the Menu Panel.

    2. Click on the Options Tab.

    3. From the Options Menu, select the Graphics Tab.

    4. In the Graphics Module, make sure that the Full-Screen Mode box is unchecked.

    5. Exit from the game

    6. When you restart the game, it will be in Windowed Mode.

    7. If you want to resize the Window, return to the Graphics Module, Click on the Screen Resolution pull-down menu, and change the game resolution. The lowest resolution for my system is 1024 x 768, while my desktop is set at 1280 x 1024.

    8. To switch from the game to your Windows Desktop, click the Minimize Tab in the top right corner of the game screen, or simply move the window by placing your cursor on the upper border of the game screen and dragging.

If you would rather set up parameters in the INI file for Civ IV, then follow these instructions:

    (1) Browse to C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 -- or your Civ4 root directory.

    (2) Double-click "_Civ4Config" -- this will load CivilizationIV.ini, which is actually stored somewhere in your MyDocuments... _Civ4Config is a shortcut to it.

    (3) Find the line that reads "FullScreen = 1"

    (4) Change the 1 to either 0 or ask (ask will make a pop-up when loading the game that lets you choose each time)

    (5) Save and Exit

    (6) Reload Civ4.

To specify the resolution of the game window (e.g., to 1024 x 768), do the following:

    (7) load the Config file as described at (2) above

    (8) Find and change ScreenHeight from 0 to 768

    (9) Find and change ScreenWidth from 0 to 1024

    (10) Save and Exit.

    (11) Reload Civ4.

Note: in windowed mode you cannot 'bump' the screen edge to scroll the map. Use your keyboard's arrow keys instead.

If you prefer playing in Full-Screen Mode, you can switch from the game to your Windows Desktop by pressing %26lt;Ctrl%26gt;-%26lt;Esc%26gt;. This minimizes the game to your Task Bar, but takes at least a few seconds, even if you have a fast computer (2.4 GHz or higher), a good graphics card (256 Mb or more), and plenty of RAM (4 Mb or greater). How can I play Civilization IV in windowed mode?

    How should I get better?

also how do I expand my territory and cities...

any help or reference to assist me would b helpfulHow should I get better at Civilization IV?
Some tips that have helped me whenever I played Civilization were as follows.

    1. Always place you cities in good locations, not too focused on growth and not too focused on building, unless that's what you want

    2. Place cities at choke points to give fortified soldiers a bonus to defense and block other nations from building cities in akward locations.

    3. Don't be aggressive unless you are radically above another nation.

    4. Don't be too ambitious, so don't expect to wipe out a nation because some of the fights get ridiculous (Once I had an Attack Helicopter attack a Pikemen defending a city, guess who won?)

    5. Always trade with your neighbors to increase you relation ship, trade cows for fish, because they have the same effect, but all that happens is that you and the other leader like each other better.

    6. Don't expand too fast, one of the hardest elements in Civilizaiton is balance, don't expand so far that you can't defend your cities and all they do is get taken over and help another nation take you over. How should I get better at Civilization IV?

Civilization IV - Hints, Tips and general suggestions Please?

I'm playing Civilization IV now on Noble Level however I am finding it very hard to compete with the computer. More often than not 3-4 nations will declare war on me. From there on in its a down hill battle to a game that I would normally be losing on by points anyway.

Any hints or tips would be appreciated.Civilization IV - Hints, Tips and general suggestions Please?
Try to expand peacefully: give tributes to your neighbours and try to adopt their religion. Keep in mind: it's impossible to maintain good relationships with everyone - so remember, it's always better to fight with distant enemies. Also, don't trade open borders with anyone, it helps keep opponents' armies away.

Build armies. Build barracks as early as you can. Research mining -%26gt; bronze working -%26gt; iron working. Use your warriors, archers, longbowmen, musketmen, machine guns, mechanized infantry for defence. Don't forget to build axemen in early ages, since they're good against every unit of ancient era. Take note of what units your opponent uses against you; for example, swordsmen aren't really useful when confronting axemen, meanwhile axemen, crossbowmen, macemen are effective against all melee units. In later ages, use grenadiers against riflemen, riflemen against cavalry, build infantry, machine guns and marines. Don't forget your air forces when in modern age. I suck at naval strategy though, sorry.

and one more thing: don't give up if somebody declares a war. Try to offer them a peace treaty as soon as possible and try to get through to modern age no matter what - it's where the real game begins!Civilization IV - Hints, Tips and general suggestions Please?

In Civilization IV, how do I know whether to build a COTTAGE or a FARM in a square?

The teal circle tips have me running around destroying my farms for cottages and my cottages for farms. How do I know which i need?In Civilization IV, how do I know whether to build a COTTAGE or a FARM in a square?
First off, turn off all the tips, hints, and any other meddling the game tries to do. Also don't let it auto-build anything nor auto-clear any forests. The AI is a moron. Like most AIs, it is far more interested in just "doing something" for the sake of it, than in having any "thought" into what it's doing (or telling you to do). AIs hate to be idle more than anything else. Unfortunately, they would rather have you LOSE than just do nothing, too.

Here's my building formula: If the ground is (green) grass, it gets a farm. Grass gives an extra food or 2, so always farm it.

Put cottages on junky land that won't grow anything well, and doesn't give enough hammers to bother mining.

Plains can get anything, so what I build there depends on what that city will do best with. If it's low on materials, put a mine...if it's not growing fast enough, put a farm...if it's too broke, put a cottage.

If you've got a forest, leave it there. Eventually you can put lumbermills and get some hammers, plus you get more hammers once you can put the railroads in. DON'T cut down any forests unless you have nowhere to put farms, because the forests also give a health bonus, and that's important once your cities get big. Better to have forests and no cottages in the occasional city, assuming you've got enough money-producing cities elsewhere to cover the costs.

Civ IV is pretty formulaic once you get the hang of it. But the main thing to remember is that the AI will always mess things up!

On the good side, the AIs obsession with "doing something"--anything rather than remaining idle--will usually mess up its own cities and its chances of winning, so once you learn all of its quirks you can tromp all over it rather easily. It is a rather fun experience to take over an entire AI-run country that lost because it's got 10 million cottages but no materials to build with (because it replaced all its mines), or no food for its army :-D

Update: Oh yeah! Put Farms on all the flood plains! They'll produce tons of food (which more than offsets the negative health from the floodplains)! In Civilization IV, how do I know whether to build a COTTAGE or a FARM in a square?

In Civilization IV, how do I know whether to build a COTTAGE or a FARM in a square?
You need just enough farms to work all of your cottages.

Let's say that you can work 18 squares. 10 of them are grassland, 6 of them are plains, and 2 are flood plains. The grassland squares can take care of themselves. No problems there. The flood plains give you extra food. So far, so good. However, those 6 plains squares will be needing farms to help them. Because the flood plains give you one extra food per square, you only need to come up with ten more food. That means five farms are necessary, with thirteen cottages. At that point, your city will stall for growth, until you learn better technology.

This is a simple but highly effective strategy that work on all difficulty levels, except perhaps for the highest.
if theres something that can be farmed there then build a farm but if its nothing special build a cottage (it turns into a town thing later on)

Can someone tell me how to download Civilization IV Beyond the Sword for free?

Ive tried several ways to download this game and none have worked. So if someone could tell me the easiest way to do this with specific instructions that would be fantastic. Can someone tell me how to download Civilization IV Beyond the Sword for free?
Downloading games for free is not only illegal but can also damage your PC and is highly difficult to do. Now if you do want to download a game you need a torrent or crack. These are again very illegal and if you do not use extreme caution and check the legitimacy of the site you are getting the torrent from your computer could get a virus. If you use torrents too often you WILL begin to receive letters from the FBI if you live in the US. So after all this if you still want to get a torrent, just do quick google search and research the torrents you find. After that its pretty easy to follow unless you have very little background knowledge of computer beforehand.

Only certain naval units allow you to carry people, and some of these units only allow you to carry certain people. In Civilization IV, how do you combat inflation?

I was rolling along in Civ IV: Beyond the Sword when I must have over-expanded. My old strategy of establishing footholds in new regions %26amp; creating dominance in the "new world" has apparently caused massive inflation and I don't know how to salvage the situation. My peoples are on strike most of the time %26amp; I can't get any research done. Will changing civics do the trick? More merchant specialists? Give away money-sucking cities to other civs? Help!In Civilization IV, how do you combat inflation?
Your maintenance costs (i.e., lost gold per turn) are the cause of your problem. Furthermore, you are probably not generating enough revenues (i.e., gained or generated gold per turn).

    The solutions are as follows:

    (1) Build Courthouses, which reduce maintenance (i.e., lost gold per turn) by 50%.

    (2) Build Banks, which increase revenues (i.e., gold per turn) by 50%.

    (3) Build Markets, which increase revenues (i.e., gold per turn) by 25%, and allow you to add up to 2 merchants to the population of each city with a market.

    (4) Build Grocers, which will increase revenues (i.e., gold per turn) by 25%, and allow you to add up to 2 merchants to the population of each city with a grocer.

    (5) Build the Wall Street National Wonder in your city with the highest revenues (i.e., gold per turn), which will increase its revenues (i.e., gold per turn) by 100%, and allow you to add up to 3 merchants to that city's population.

TO FIND OUT the amount of your REVENUES and MAINTENANCE COSTS for each your cities, press the %26lt;F1%26gt; key. You will see a display with each row representing each of your cities, listed in chronological order by the date when they were founded. Among the columns are GOLD, which shows how much gold revenues are generated per turn by the city, and MAINTENANCE, which shows how much gold is lost each turn because of maintenace costs.

    (6) Choose one of these civilizations as your starting civilization:

(6A) An American civilization will allow you to build Malls in each city, increasing revenues (i.e., gold per turn) by 20% (instead of Supermarkets, which add nothing to revenues).

(6B) An English civilization will allow you to build Stock Exchanges in each city, increasing revenues (i.e., gold per turn) by 65%, instead of Banks, which only increase revenues by 50%.

(6C) A Holy Roman Empire civilizaiton will allow you to build a Rathaus in each city, reducing maintenance (i.e., lost gold per turn) by 75%.

    (7) Try to be the first civilization to research each of the 7 religions. Then, when a Great Prophet is born, use him to build a religious World Wonder. The following world wonders correspond to each of the religions: The Temple of Solomon (Judaism), The Church of the Nativity (Christianity), The Masjid Al-Haram (Islam), The Kashi Wishwanath (Hinduism), The Mahabodhi (Buddhism), The Kong Miao (Confucianism), The Dai Miao (Taoism). When you have these world wonders, the city in which they are built receives 1 gold unit (revenue) per turn for each city into which that religion has spread.

    (8) Add as many merchants to the population of as many cities as possible. Each merchant adds 3 gold units (revenues) per turn.

    (9) After you have added the maximum number of merchants for a city, add as many priests as possible. Each priest adds 1 gold unit (revenue) per turn.

    (10) Add Great Merchant super specialists to the city with the largest revenues (i.e., the most gold per turn). Each Great Merchant adds 6 gold per turn to the city where it is located.

    (11) Add Great Prophet super specialists to the city with the largest revenues (i.e., the most gold per turn). Each Great Prophet adds 5 gold per turn to the city where it is located.

    (12) Add Great Artist super specialists to the city with the most revenues (i.e., the most gold per turn). Each Great Artist adds 3 gold per turn to the city where it is located.

    (13) Build as many temples as possible in as many cities as possible. Each temple that you build in a city will allow you to add one priest to that city's population.

    (14) Build as many cathedrals (Jewish Synagogue, Christian Cathedral, Islamic Mosque, Hindu Mandir, Buddhist Stupa, Confucian Academy, Taoist Pagoda) as possible, particularly in your largest revenue-generating cities (i.e., cities with the most gold per turn). You can only build cathedrals in at most 25% of your cities, because you must build 4 temples in the corresponding religion before you can build a cathedral. Each cathedral allows you to add up to 3 priests to the population of the city where it is built.

    (15) Build the Versailles World Wonder in a city centrally located near other cities that have high maintenance costs (i.e., lost gold per turn). Versailles reduces maintenance costs (i.e., lost gold per turn) in the city where it is located, and also reduces maintenance (i.e., lost gold per turn) in nearby cities.

    (16) Build The Temple of Artemis Worldl Wonder in your city with the highest revenues (i.e., most gold per turn), which will increase revenue (i.e., gold yield) from trade routes by 100% in that city, and adds one free priest to the population of that city.

    (17) Build The Great Lighthouse in your largest coastal city, especially if you have many seaport cities, because it adds 2 trade routes to each coastal city, increasing revenues (i.e., gold) in coastal cities.

    (18) Build Angkor Wat World Wonder in your city with the highest revenues (i.e., most gold per turn), which enables you to add up to 3 priests to the population of that city.

    (19) If you have created one or more of the religious world wonders, build missionaries for that religion until you have spread that religion to every accessible city, including cities in other civilizations, since every city to which a religion is spread will add one gold per turn to the city that contains the corresponding religion's world wonder.

    (20) Later in the game, when you have researched Corporations, spread Sid's Sushi Company (by building Sid's Sushi executives and sending them on corporate missions) to as many cities as possible, including cities in other civilizations, especially if you have many coastal cities, and you have plenty of Fish, Clams, Crabs, and Rice. Sid's Sushi Company is one of the best corporate generators of revenues (i.e., gold per turn).

The above 20 suggestions are good strategies for reducing maintenance (i.e., lost gold) and increasing revenues (i.e., gold per turn), but I could add many other suggestions which might fill a manual. In Civilization IV, how do you combat inflation?

Im pretty sure every question or concerned is in this very thread concerning inflation.

    http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread鈥?/a>

And this to(also its quiet the same).

Here are some key statements that are in the threads.

""Inflation increases every turn. There is nothing you can do about it. It is a game mechanism that is there to increase the cost of everything.""

""Inflation increases over time, and there is little you can do to affect it. It's a fudge factor put in for balance reasons, for which "inflation" is just a convenient name. It has nothing to do with real life inflation.""

""Inflation is the reason you may have +5 gold 1 turn, +4 the next, +3 a few turns later, eventually leading to loss of money""

After you read all that if you want to. You most certainly want to check this thread as it tells you an effective way to understand the inflation with formulas and calculations and also ways that can offset it!

In Civilization IV, how do you combat inflation?
Well Dave, it is probably not inflation so much as it is routine city maintenance that is killing you. Inflation isn't helping, but if the sudden addition of new cities on separate continents is what sent your economy into the tank, its more a problem of distance from your palace than it is inflation.

If you are interested in keeping those overseas cities for yourself, you have three options. (Reasons for keeping them include going for a domination victory, inability to give them to a friendly civ and/or create a new colony with them, or maybe they have some really useful wonders in them like the United Nations or the Pyramids.)

Option 1: Build either the forbidden palace or Versailles in one of those cites. That will immediately drop the maintenance down to almost nothing, and you'll be back in business.

Option 2: Switch your civic to State Property. There are a few down sides to this, but the maintenance problem will go away immediately.

Option 3: Switch your civics to whatever ones generate the most gold in your home cities, do what you can to maximize gold in those cities (meaning, change your city assignments to have your people working the commerce generating tiles) while you immediately start building courthouses in every single overseas city. Once the courthouses are up, you should be able to ease up your gold emphasis in the home cities, and then come up with a plan for what you are planning to do with those cities on the other continent.

If you are getting close to the domination victory, and can't switch to state property for some reason, then build those courthouses and keep taking enemy cities until you reach the domination limit. If you can switch to state property, DO SO, and then keep taking enemy cities until you win.

If you want to keep those cities, because they will one way or another help you win the space race, then build courthouses and one of the two wonders I mentioned above. After that, you can go about your business as usual. If you've already build the forbidden palace on your home continent, make a note to yourself not to do that again. If somebody else has already build Versailles, take a look at the victory advisor screen (top cities, wonders window) and see if it happens to be in a city close to where your new overseas cities are. If so, I would recommend sending your troops over there ASAP, and capturing it for yourself. Hell, it was war that got you into this situtation, it can also get you out of it.

On a related note, I often find that the solution to making enough gold to support new overseas cities is to have a couple super commerce cities on my home continent. I prefer to have a couple cities with lots of cottages and all of the commerce multiplying buildings in it (Market/grocer/bank and library/university/observatory). If I'm lucky and have a religious shrine in one of those cities, I'll also build Wall Street in that city.

  • How do I win space race on Civilization IV?

I've been trying to win the space race in Sid Meyer's Civ 4 and I keep ending up at about two pieces away when time runs on the game. Anyone know a better way, just tips or a little strategic help, to actually get it completed BEFORE the game ends? I don't want a step by step walk through, just some guidance. How do I win space race on Civilization IV?
That question could lead to some long answers indeed. But here are some pointers that I've picked up along the way, all having to do with technology:

    1. Get ahead early! Don't ignore technology for money or troops early in the game. Research Writing and get those libraries completed.

    2. Don't worry about gaining lots of money early on in the game. Make sure that your research level remains high. If you have gained money from huts, don't feel pressured to keep it. If you are only losing 1 gold a turn but have 150 gold from various sources, don't be afraid to leave it that way for a while for the sake of research.

    3. Here's a trick I found out while researching your question: monasteries give +10% science too!

    4. Use any great scientists you get to build their academies in cities! +50% science cannot be ignored, however tempting the short term goal of getting an instant tech may be!

    5. There can be a lot of improvements to chose from later in the game, but just like libraries, the observatories, laboratories, and universities that come along later should not be ignored.

    6. If you are still having trouble, choose a race/leader that has better research capabilities, such as the Russians, French, and Koreans who have special buildings that help with science, or Lincoln and Elizabeth, who have the Philosophical leader traits. (Just to name a few of each)

Finally, choose where your improvements/academies/etc. go wisely. Don't bother trying to help a city that's only producing 2 science a turn. Then the money vs. research battle rears its ugly head and you are paying but not getting your moneys worth. Make a rule for yourself on when to start building research improvements, such as when a city starts making 8 science a turn (that's a random number, I change my number every game). The early game will decide the end game, and if you aren't ahead early, you can forget a space race win. Building the space ship parts is easy enough, getting there with decent time left to build them is what is important.

Civilization IV: Expansion Packs, can they be played at once?

I am debating on whether or not to get Civilization IV and the expansion packs for christmas. Will I be able to play all three of the expansion packs as one? Like in zoo tycoon the marine expansion pack goes on top of the first one, allowing you to do all of it.

And of course, is the game fun :D?Civilization IV: Expansion Packs, can they be played at once?
    Yes to both!

The expansion packs will add on to the original one by one, and will all play together. (Beyond the Sword includes the Warlords set, I only bought BTS and got both) In fact, I don't think you should play without the expansion packs, because they clean up some glitches in the original game.

And is the game fun? Let me put it this way: I'm an avid PC gamer, and I have been watching my dad play the Civ games since I was 3, playing myself since I was 8. Nothing that I have ever found holds a candle to Civ 4. Nothing.

Not very familiar with that but assume it's integrated graphics. I just bought the whole Civ IV set and run it at the highest settings using only my i3-540 cpu's integrated graphics. Not sure how yours stacks up to the i3's but Civ IV isn't very demanding at all and with the great deal that Steam has going for the game right now it'd be a shame to pass it up (only 10 bucks for the game and all expansions right now). Hope this helped.

However, that may not be the case with Civilization IV Beyond the Sword.

There are many games that will not run unless you install it is the C: drive AND in the Program Files folder.

  • Is there anyway to make an atheistic state in Civilization IV?

Basically, is there anyway to stop your civilization from gaining a religion. I know you could avoid signing open borders agreements with nations to stop their missionaries, but cities with no religion tend to quickly adopt the religion of the nearest city that has one (regardless of which CIV it belongs to). Is there a way to absolutely prevent religion in your empire with just destroying your own cities over and over?Is there anyway to make an atheistic state in Civilization IV?
Yes, there is one way to guarantee control over the religious condition of any city.

Press %26lt;Ctrl-W%26gt;, to open World Builder. You will see a menu in the upper right corner of your screen. One of the options is Edit City Mode Menu. Click on it. Next, select any of your cities, and click on it to open the World Builder Edit Control menu for that city, which will appear in the middle of your screen. You will see icons for each of the religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confusianism, and Taoism). You can toggle each of the seven world religions on or off here for the selected city. If you want to add any of the religions, highlight the icon for a religion, and click on it. If you want to remove any religion, highlight its icon, and click on it. Whenever a religion is added to any of your cities via missionary diffusion, use this procedure to remove the religion. By using this procedure at any time, you can add or remove any or all religions from each of your cities individually. Is there anyway to make an atheistic state in Civilization IV?
Keep your state religion to none, and change your civics to Theocracy, because it prevents the spread of non-state religions. Only thing is you'll need the Theology tech to enable Theocracy, unless you're completely isolated, some religion would have spread into some of your cities.

Do your people have to trespass other country's territory to get to the country you've declared war? If yes, Then that's why you cannot, You have to make a deal with this person to 'Open Borders'... That's the only reason I can remember now...

    Civilization IV?

should i get CIV 4?Civilization IV?
If you have the computing power, absolutely! It's a great strategy game with a lot of tactical improvements over Civ III. Plus it looks and sounds slick: I love the videos, I love the historical quotes read by Leonard Nimoy, and I love the music.

All that slickness comes with a price, however. While it runs quite nicely on my 2 current Windows boxes, my old laptop -- which wasn't THAT old (1.52GHz AMD CPU, 512MB RAM) -- couldn't support it due to a lame display adapter. So check out the system requirements and if you meet the RECOMMENDED requirements (as opposed to just the minimum ones), buy Civ IV!Civilization IV?
Yes! It is one of the best games ever made.

    Civilization Iv?

anyone knows where i can get a full free version for the pc?Civilization Iv?
it's illegal but you can get it at www.mininova.org and search for it

it'll be a torrent file so you'll need bittorrent program such as Utorrent or i think azura (cant remember if that's the name) to get it.

it'll take a while to download the game btwCivilization Iv?
For free? No. Illegally? you could but i would strongly suggest you dont. BUY THE GAMES YOU PLAY!! Civilisation isnt an expensive game. GET A JOB, or ask your mommy and daddy for money.

What is the theme music for Civilization IV PC Game?

On the main menu of the PC Game Civilization IV (Base Game, not an expansion), where you see the earth turning, what is the song that plays? What is the theme music for Civilization IV PC Game?
All of the songs are MP3 files that can be easily played. From your computer's explorer, just go to C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization IV\Assets\Sounds\Soundtrack. You will find subdirectories for each of the Eras: Classical, Industrial, Medieval, Modern, and Renaissance. Within these subdirectories are a total of 65 mp3 files, representing all of the music. They are named clearly enough that you can narrow down the possibilities. Play each of the likely files until you find the one(s) that you are seeking.

You can place all of your favorite music (as mp3 files) into a specified directory of your own choosing, then go to the Audio tab in the Options menu and indicate the location of these files in "Custom Music Files." Then you can enjoy your favorite music while playing Civ, which may be best after you've played hundreds of hours and listened to the built-in soundtrack for too long. What is the theme music for Civilization IV PC Game?
The base song for Civ 4 is called Baba Yetu, and is the Swahili version of the Lord's Prayer and is named OpeningMenu.MP3 as stated by the person who answered.

Should I buy Civilization IV or wait until September when Civiliztion V comes out?

I've played Civilization Revolution and I loved it. I just bought a computer and I want to get Civ V, is Civ IV worth buying this close to Civ V's release?Should I buy Civilization IV or wait until September when Civiliztion V comes out?
If you cant get both I would wait. Civ 5 will have much improved graphics and a hexagonal grid instead of a square one. If you can afford both get Civ 4 to learn basic Civilization and get good for when the new one comes out on September 21st.

  • Civilization IV, are the expansions an addon to the original game or a diffrent game all together?

I have ordered Civilization IV and its two expansions of play.com. i was woundering if the expansions are just an addon to the original game, should i play the orginal and then download the expanions and play them one at a time. or should i load them all on and play it as one.Civilization IV, are the expansions an addon to the original game or a diffrent game all together?
The expansion packs that you are probably referring to are Warlords and Beyond the Sword. When Civ IV came on the scene in 2005, I played it for about one year until Warlords became available in 2006. It was such an improvement that I never went back to the original Civ 4. About one year later in 2007, Beyond the Sword was marketed, and it was so much better than Warlords that I never returned to the earlier expansion pack.

Of course, you must install Civ 4 first before you can install either of the expansion packs. You cannot play Warlords and Beyond the Sword as a combination--they are two completely separate games.

If you want to gradually learn how to play, or you want to experience Civilization in all of its variants, then you might want to try Civ 4 sans expansion packs, then Warlords. However, I would recommend just playing Beyond the Sword, since it is vastly superior to all prior versions.

Just check your system against it. Civ 4 isn't graphics intensive.

How do I edit my civics in Civilization IV?

I want to change my civics in Civilization IV. However, I don't know how to do it unless the game automatically offers a revolution. The manual tells me to press F3 but all that happens when I do is that bread is shown on my map. Also I am in the modern era and I don't know how to do it. Please help! How do I edit my civics in Civilization IV?
On the top-right of the screen, where you find the little buttons for main menu, foreign advisor, defense advisor, tech advisor, convert religion, one of the buttons will say "change civics". I think it'll be the button with the gold ring.
